SMD End-Face Crown Drill is a replaceable-tip drilling system designed to deliver high efficiency, stable performance, and cost-effective machining.
With its reliable quick-change structure, the SMD series allows fast tip replacement, helping reduce machine downtime and improve overall productivity. Its upgraded and deepened flute design improves chip evacuation, making it especially suitable for deep-hole and continuous drilling applications.

The SMD crown drill is built for rigidity and dependable clamping.
The close fit between the drill tip and screw connection helps extend tool life and reduce tooling cost. The shank end is designed with a clear center-coolant thread hole, making it convenient for lathe coolant supply and contributing to more stable cooling and chip removal during machining.

For tip geometry, the SMD series offers different drill tip options to match various materials and machining requirements.
The SMDT 140° tip is suitable for general drilling applications, offering a good balance of stable entry and versatility, while the TCFA 180° tip is more suitable for applications requiring a flatter hole bottom. The catalog also shows PT and DR tip categories: PT is suitable for P / M / K materials, while DR is intended for steel and softer materials in the P group.

The SMD range covers multiple drilling depths, including 1.5D, 3D, 5D, 8D, 10D, and 12D, providing flexible solutions for different hole depths and machining setups. The drill tip diameter range extends from 12.0 mm to 33.5 mm, while the TCFA range covers 12.0 mm to 30.5 mm. This makes the series suitable for a wide variety of holemaking tasks in mechanical component manufacturing and deep-hole drilling applications.

In addition to drilling, the SMD system can also be applied to grooving, chamfering, and form machining, making it an excellent replacement for traditional tooling solutions. According to the recommended cutting parameter chart in the catalog, the SMD series can be used for P, M, K, and N material groups, including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and some non-ferrous materials.

To achieve the best machining performance, the installation procedure should include cleaning the contact surfaces, aligning the tip groove with the holder groove, and tightening the two screws alternately. The runout at both ends should be controlled within 0–0.02 mm. Proper installation helps ensure the high rigidity, efficiency, and long service life of the tool.
